The must-have of every adventurer’s wardrobe is a light, durable and long-lasting down jacket. But what should also be added to that list is a CLEAN down jacket. Caring for your jacket not only makes it look new, but also ensures it is performing at its best.
Step 1 - Prep
Before getting started, empty all pockets and close all zippers. Fasten buttons and straps, secure hook-and-loop fasteners at their widest setting, and release any drawcords. Shake away - but do not pick at - any dust and dirt that has accumulated.
For best practice, always check the care label (in the left or chest pocket) for special washing instructions and try to limit full washes to once a year.
Step 2 - Detergent
The right detergent makes a big difference. We recommend using an eco-friendly down detergent.
CAUTION: Avoid powder detergents, bleach, and fabric softener. Running an empty hot wash in advance will ensure your machine is clear of any excess products.
Step 3 - How to wash down jackets
Machine wash cold (30°C/85°F), ideally with an extra rinse cycle and low spin setting. If your machine does not does not have such settings available, use a delicate cycle.
Step 4 - Dry with a towel
To properly dry your jacket, turn it inside out and lay it on a flat surface where you can remove excess moisture by gently pressing on it with a clean towel and using a “rolling” motion. Do the same for the outside and then unzip pockets to dry inside with the towel. Do not leave down jackets to dry on radiators or in the sun.
Step 5 - Tumble dry
Tumble dry low, adding three dryer balls (or clean tennis balls) into the machine to prevent the down from clumping. If you are in a rush, you can accelerate drying by turning the jacket arms inside out every 20-30 minutes. Make sure the jacket is fully dry before removing it from the dryer.
Tip: tumble drying has the added benefit of reactivating your jacket's durable water repellent (DWR) treatment. Test it by sprinkling a couple drops of water over the surface. If the water beads off, you're ready to go. If it soaks through, move on to step 5.
Step 6 - Waterproofing
If water is no longer beading off your jacket, even after re-activating the durable water repellent (DWR) in the dryer, then it's time for a refresh. We recommend using an eco-friendly impregnation spray, commonly found at your local outdoor retailer.
Apply the spray outdoors, following the instructions on the bottle, with a special focus on high-wear areas like the shoulders and upper back.
Tips
Try not to wash your down jacket any more than once a year!
